Zetsurin Karate

Business of the Week, Sports & Leisure

Zetsurin Karate is a true family affair, led by Ruth and Paul Hickman alongside their son Lewis — the club’s three dedicated sensei. Together, they bring decades of experience, discipline, and passion to their practice, shaping Zetsurin into much more than a martial arts club.

During the pandemic, the Hickmans transformed a run-down first-floor space above Manor Square and Bay Horse Court into a purpose-built dojo. It was a labour of love — and no small feat — but the result is now a vibrant training hub where students of all ages and abilities come together.

The name Zetsurin translates as “peerless,” “matchless,” or “unequalled” — and it’s a fitting description. With a strong emphasis on traditional karate, the club has built a growing community in Otley and beyond, producing competitors who’ve represented at every level from local tournaments to world championships.

Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning to hone your skills, Zetsurin offers a welcoming space grounded in respect, tradition, and continual growth.
