Twenty Watt

Business of the Week, Furniture & homeware

Twenty Watt Shades owner Sally Stubbs originally hails from Menston and began her working life as a social worker before a creative sidestep changed everything.

After signing up for an upholstery course, Sally quickly discovered a love for working with fabric, colour and design. But with limited space at home for large furniture projects, she turned her attention to something more manageable: lampshades.

What started as a practical workaround soon became a passion. Using her artistic flair, Sally began transforming tired old lamps into beautiful, characterful pieces, often using unexpected materials including stamps, vintage maps, old artwork and carefully chosen fabrics.

Before long, her shades were being sold at festivals and fairs, and stocked by homeware stores. In 2024, Sally took the leap and opened her Twenty Watt Shades workshop on Westgate in Otley, where the bright shopfront and original bay window provide the perfect showcase for her work.

Today, Sally creates both ready-to-buy and bespoke lampshades, helping customers bring colour, warmth and personality into their homes. The shop also stocks a tasteful range of gifts and greeting cards, making it a lovely stop for anyone looking for something a little different.
