When Alison Barton, originally from Horsforth, and her husband Andrew, originally from Pool in Wharfedale, set up their business, there was only one place they wanted to do it: Otley.
That was back in 1997, when they first launched a tool hire company, renting out all kinds of light and heavy machinery to individuals and businesses who needed to get a job done, but didn’t have the need, space or budget to buy the tools themselves.
Over the years, the business gradually evolved. As demand for garden machinery grew, the company shifted more in that direction, prompting a name change and, eventually, the sale of the original rental side of the business.
Otley Garden Machinery now runs across two sites. Its original home on The Garth, close to The Fleece pub, focuses on walk-behind mowers and smaller tools, while the second site, in the former B&TS yard backing onto North Parade car park, is where visitors can browse ride-on mowers and larger equipment.
Serving Otley and the surrounding area for around 30 years, the teams at both branches offer sales, servicing and repairs, along with the kind of practical advice that can save you from buying something wildly unsuitable because it looked shiny on the internet.
The showrooms stock a wide range of equipment, including lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, brushcutters, leaf blowers, tillers, rotavators and accessories, with petrol, electric, cordless and robotic models available.
Otley Garden Machinery also works with leading brands including STIHL, Honda, Hayter, Atco, Stiga, EGO and Cobra, and has a fully equipped workshop for servicing and repairs.
