A year after opening New Rose Tattoo in the old Sift Café in late 2024, experienced tattooist John McAlary added a new dimension to Otley’s independent scene — this time swapping ink for clay with the launch of North Pottery.

John has been tattooing for more than a decade, but pottery has long been a parallel passion. Now, he’s transformed the old kitchen space above the studio into a calm, intimate wheel-throwing workshop — a place where people can come to learn the fundamentals of working with clay and develop real hands-on skills.

This isn’t a hobby café or paint-a-pot set-up. At North Pottery, it’s about genuine creative learning, whether through one-to-one tuition, small group sessions, or an open studio membership. It’s thoughtful, tactile, and rooted in the same attention to detail that defines John’s tattoo work.

Accessed via the ginnel behind New Rose, North Pottery is another smart and soulful addition to Otley’s ever-growing creative community — and a great example of local business owners investing back into the town in imaginative ways.
