Luscious Scarves

Business of the Week, Clothing & fashion

Luscious Scarves is very much a family affair. For more than 20 years, Nab Wood couple Sonya Johnson and David Tomlinson – plus their much-loved dog Marshall – have been familiar faces on the Yorkshire market circuit, running stalls in Otley, Knaresborough and Ripon. After two decades of trading outdoors in all weathers, Sonya has finally realised a long-held dream: opening her own bricks-and-mortar boutique in Otley.

The opportunity came thanks to a tip-off from fellow former Otley market traders Simon and Becky, who told them the old Halifax building on Kirkgate was up for grabs before before the sign even went in the window.

They’d had their eye on it the year before, but after delays and the limits of running things from home, October 2025 was the moment to take the leap. The old bank has now been completely transformed into a warm, welcoming space that feels more like a treasure trove than a high street shop.

Inside, everything is hand-picked by Sonya. The rails and shelves are full of scarves, bags, jumpers, toys and accessories with an international flavour. Pieces are sourced from makers as close as Manchester and London, and as far as Italy and Nepal, with many of them Fair Trade. Her focus is on things that are practical, good quality and fun to wear, whether that’s a cashmere wrap, a bright Pachamama, or a pair of famously soft bamboo socks.

Day to day, Sonya runs the shop while David keeps the market side of the business alive. For those who can’t make it into town or the market, their website offers a full e-commerce option with free UK shipping on orders over £45.
