Like Nana Did

Business of the Week, Food & drink shops

Like Nana Did is a traditional dried groceries, sweet treats and household goods shop that was inspired, as you might have guessed, by owner Jo Lyons visiting her grandmother in old-school style shops in Manchester.

The shop on Market Street is a real treasure trove, allowing people to buy household goods in a weigh-and-pay style, so reducing people’s effect on the environment.

Stocked with a variety of dried goods including pasta, pulses, beans, cereals, nuts and dried fruit, as well as gifts and refillable cosmetics and cleaning materials it has quickly become a firm favourite in Otley’s already unique shopping scene.

In fact, when we asked for nominations from the public for our Business of the Week section, Like Nana Did gained a large number of nominations from the people who shop there.

Janey Mac told us: “I nominate Like Nana Did for the following reasons:

  • Helping people save money, they sell in the amounts the shoppers need, you could buy a tablespoon of chili powder if you wanted! Its very cheap as well.
  • Helping the environment- they are zero waste so our planet is better off
  • They chat to all their customers which helps with community building as well as loneliness/ poor mental health
  • They deliver for nowt
  • They are part of Shop Otley, helping to make Otley great and promoting local shopping.
  • Their stuff is actually great, they will make up baking kits for you and give you advice.
  • Lastly- the shop smells really nice!”

While Helen Wilkin said: “I would like to nominate Like Nana Did, such a great shop with everything you needed and environmentally friendly. Great friendly helpful staff. My favourite place to shop.”
