Fliss & Ivy

Business of the Week, Clothing & fashion

When Andy Sutcliffe stands by the Fliss & Ivy stall on Otley Market, he stands in the same spot where his grandparents traded more than 60 years ago.

The stall later passed to his aunt and uncle before Andy and his wife Alicia took it over in 2004. Since then, they’ve continued the family tradition, bringing quality women’s clothing to customers in Otley for more than two decades.

Market trading is very much in the Sutcliffe family blood. Andy and Alicia also trade on Knaresborough Market, while other members of the family run stalls in places including Beverley, Pocklington and Ripon.

After years of successful market trading, Andy and Alicia took the next step and opened their first bricks-and-mortar Fliss & Ivy shop in Knaresborough in 2024, adding a sister store on Market Place in Otley in the summer of 2026.

With the Otley market stall still trading just outside the shop on market days, the permanent store gives them the chance to serve customers throughout the week, with a wide range of women’s clothing and accessories including everything from pullovers to pashminas, and handbags to harem pants… and plenty more besides.

The couple source their ranges from established manufacturers in the UK and Italy and regularly attend major fashion trade shows to keep an eye on the latest styles and trends.

And fashion can move remarkably quickly. Andy says that if a particular style appears on a TV presenter one morning, their suppliers can sometimes have something similar available on the market stall within a matter of days.

So while the Otley shop itself may be relatively new, the family’s love of fashion, personal service and quality clothing has been a constant in Otley for more than 60 years.
