John Turner left a long-standing career with a national ventilation company and, alongside wife Debbie, scoured the north to find a suitable location for their dream café, before falling in love with Otley.
Opening in April 2024 in what was the old Nostalgia Tearooms in lovely Bay Horse Court, Coast to Country borrows from the couple’s backgrounds. John was born and raised in Robin Hood’s Bay, while Debbie originates from north Leeds. The coast to country styling can be seen around the cafe in huge murals, from the 199 steps that lead to Whitby Abbey, to a quite lovely drone shot of the Arthington Viaduct.
The cafe offers all the usual fare, with many of the cakes and cookies made by John himself. There’s also a small outside seating area, as well as a special sensory area to the rear of the café.
The Turners have children with autism in the family and they are keen for the café to be a welcoming space for all. As such the sensory area has low-level lighting, low background music, a play area, and a number of sensory items such as wobble boards and noise-cancelling headphones.
