Otley String Academy
If you’ve heard beautifully played violin at a concert in Otley, there’s a fair chance it was being played by Asuka Sumi, a musician of genuine international renown.
Born into a family of violin teachers in her native Japan, Asuka has spent her life immersed in music. After studying in Tokyo and Amsterdam, she went on to build a career as a specialist in historical performance, playing at major concert halls and early music festivals across Europe and working with some of the UK’s leading Baroque ensembles.
Since making her home in Otley, Asuka has become a familiar presence in the town’s musical life. She leads Leeds Baroque, performs regularly, and also runs the Otley Baroque series of concerts, helping bring world-class historical performance to local audiences.
Now settled in Otley with her husband Adam Cathcart, Associate Professor of East Asian History at the University of Leeds and an accomplished cello player, and their son, Asuka has brought that depth of musical knowledge closer to home through Otley String Academy.
Together, Asuka and Adam teach violin, viola and cello to students ranging from eight to 80, offering lessons in Otley, Leeds and online. Complete beginners are very much encouraged, as are more advanced musicians who want to develop their technique, confidence and musical understanding.
Asuka’s teaching combines serious expertise with patience, warmth and a deep love of music. Lessons can support young learners working towards ABRSM grades and music theory, but the academy is clear that grades are not the whole point. The bigger aim is to help students build confidence, creativity, good technique and a real connection with the instrument.
For adults, it is also a reminder that it is never too late to begin. Whether you are picking up a violin for the first time, returning after years away, or looking for specialist guidance in Baroque violin technique, Otley String Academy offers a thoughtful and highly personal way to learn.
Lessons are available in English and Japanese, with flexible options including one-off sessions, personalised consultations and a 30-minute try-out lesson.
