Back in 2015, hairdresser Josh Matthew spotted a gap in the local men’s market. Not for another barbershop — but for something different.
A premium barbering experience outside the big cities. Think later openings, good music, and a well-stocked beer fridge if you fancy one while you’re in the chair.
So he took the plunge and opened Dexters in Ilkley — named after a family pet — and the four-chair, upmarket salon quickly built a loyal following, racking up more than 200 five-star Google reviews along the way.
Fast forward to March 2026 and Dexters arrived in Otley.
For Josh, it was the obvious next step. Close to Ilkley, a similar feel, and a town that backs its independents. And while Otley has no shortage of barbers, he believed there was room for something that offered a little bit extra.
After more than a year scouting locations, he found the right place at the front of the Westgate Arcade, in what was formerly a computer repair shop. But true to form, Josh hasn’t just replicated the Ilkley model — he’s pushed things on again.
The Otley shop introduces a wellness element, with a discreet therapy space at the back in partnership with NHS physio Helen Evans of Wharfedale Wellness. Alongside the barbering, clients can now book appointments for physiotherapy, sports massage, advanced aesthetics, and even PRP hair restoration, delivered by Helen and her select group of therapists.
So yes, you can still pop in for a sharp cut.
But you might also leave having sorted your dodgy shoulder and your hairline at the same time.
Only in Otley – for now at least.
