Yorkshire Pecorino
When Mario Olianas left his home country of Italy to study English, little did he know that two decades later he’d be producing award-winning Italian cheese right here in God’s Own County.
Born in Vienna to an Italian father and an Austrian mother, he was brought up in Sardinia where his fisherman father installed a love of fresh food in the young Mario. But meeting his partner Sonia, changed on that while on his study visit that saw him settle in his adopted homeland of Yorkshire.
Mario worked first as a delivery driver and then in catering before deciding to start his own cheesemaking business, first in the family home and now in Otley’s Dairy Yard. The first step was selling his homemade Italian produce at Leeds Farmers Market, before he became a regular at Otley’ Farmer’s Market and decided to make the town the home for his business.
Whether at his pop up shop in Dairy Yard or still on the Farmer’s Market, you can buy the award-winning cheese such as Leeds Blue, Yorkshire Pecorino and Ricotta, doughnuts, ricotta-filled pastries and other produce, as well as hot dishes like pork meatballs, stuffed peppers, stuffed focaccia lasagne, parmigiana and canelloni.
