Rory McQuaid followed in his mother’s footsteps when he founded The Ethical Jeweller on Market Street in March 2004 and has been serving the people of Otley ever since.
The shop specialises in Fair Trade, bespoke commissions (often repurposing second hand or recycled items), reclaimed gemstones, watch repairs and much more.
A trend-setter when the store first opened and a staunch pillar of the Otley business community, Rory remains ahead of the game when it comes to new trends in the jewellery industry, with lab-grown diamonds predicted to be the next big thing.
The diamonds are made in labs allowing for more consistency of clarity, colour and, ultimately, quality.
“People will now be able to choose their diamonds on based on either their humanitarian or environmental concerns.” he says. “Those looking to protect the environment and reduce mining can purchase lab-grown. Those looking to protect the jobs of miners who work for ethical companies can continue to purchase Fair Trade.”
